Discover the Moving Dunes in Słowiński National Park

The moving dunes are a true natural phenomenon. They cover an area of over 500 hectares and are subject to continuous change. They are made of fine, clean, and completely unpolluted white sea sand. It is the Baltic Sea that provides this valuable material in the form of wonderfully shimmering white sand, and the wind and sea currents carry it inland. The result of this process is majestic dunes, reaching even dozens of meters in height. The largest of them, the Łącka Dune, measures over 40 meters and owes its name to a village that was covered by the moving dunes.

The moving dunes get their name from the fact that they move several to a dozen meters eastward every year. This is caused by the constant western wind, which moves grains of sand from west to east. As a result, the western slope of the dunes is gentle and long, and the eastern one is steep and short. As a result, the dunes are gradually burying Lake Łebsko, which is leading to a decrease in its surface area.

Minimal Human Intervention

What distinguishes Słowiński National Park is the minimal human intervention in the natural landscape. Here, nature paints the landscape, creating it anew every day. This park is a true treasure of Poland, preserved in its natural, wild beauty. Man has an influence on shaping the environment, but fertilizing such a huge amount of clean sand would simply be logistically impossible. The Baltic Sea provides this valuable raw material in the form of wonderfully shimmering white sand, and the wind and sea currents carry it inland. The result of this process is majestic dunes, reaching even dozens of meters in height. The sand that forms the dunes also comes partly from deep inland, carried by rivers to the sea. One of the key factors in shaping the dunes is the process of abrasion. It’s the collisions of waves with the cliffs of the coast, which slowly erode and release sand. It is this sand that travels further in a mysterious way. Sea currents and waves take it from the bottom of the Baltic Sea, and then deposit it along the coast of Słowiński National Park. The sand accumulates in huge shoals arranged along the shore, known as a sandbar. From there, waves and currents systematically move it to the beach. It is here, at the place of its deposition, that the dunes are formed. The dunes grow gradually, as a result of the sand being moved from one side to the other. It’s like a great sandbox game in which nature is the main artist. The dunes can reach impressive sizes and become an icon of Słowiński National Park. This fascinating process of creating dunes is an excellent example of how nature can create wonderful works of art. For tourists and researchers, the dunes become not only a place to visit but also an inspiration to delve into the mysteries of nature.

A Tourist's Paradise

This park is a true paradise for nature lovers. It is a place that you discover best by walking along the specially marked tourist trails with a total length of 140 kilometers. These trails lead you through a variety of ecosystems, taking you on an amazing journey through nature.

Starting from dense forests, the trails lead you through gray dunes, picturesque meadows, heaths, and mysterious peat bogs. Thanks to them, you can discover the charms of the surrounding lakes, where specially built platforms and observation towers allow you to admire the surrounding landscape. The next stages of the route take you through white dunes and foredunes, until you finally reach the sandy beaches stretching for several dozen kilometers.

However, that’s not all that awaits tourists in this park. Those who decide to visit in the autumn or winter will have the opportunity to witness an extraordinary phenomenon. In gusts of wind, the sand from the tops of the dunes rises into the air, creating an effect reminiscent of delicate water dust rising on an ocean wave. It is then said that the dunes “smoke.” But that’s not the end of the attractions. The wind also causes millions of tiny sand grains to rub against each other, which makes the dunes literally “sing.”

The park attracts about a million tourists every year who want to escape from the city noise and rush. For many of them, it is a place where they can relax, walking in the forest, listening to the sound of waves and the calls of seagulls. Here they can enjoy solitude in the bosom of nature, away from the city noise, which helps soothe their frayed nerves and recharge their batteries.
